Cultural & Asian-Australian Issues

Culture Matters in Therapy

Our culture is often an important part of our life experience that colours our experiences. Culture touches many aspects of our lives: our sense of belonging & identity, personal values, family expectations, how emotions are expressed, and social behaviour. Without understanding the myriad impacts of culture, crucial context is removed and our experiences become at risk of not being fully understood by ourselves and others.

Using the Asian diaspora as an example, Asians may have unique leanings in their life experience such as:

  • Academic and professional pressure

  • Identity challenges

  • Experiences with racism & discrimination, both overt and under-the-table

  • Hierarchical relationships with family and external authority

  • Focus on the group rather than individual’s wellbeing

  • Lower emotional expression

Although no group of people is homogenous, understanding the varied effects of one’s culture may lead to greater understanding & thus improved functioning moving forward.
