ADHD Coaching
What is ADHD?
If you have ADHD, it is important to know that you are not simply “lazy” or “lack willpower”. ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) is a recognised medical condition which has been shown to have a strong degree of genetic heritability & also results in unique patterns in the brain.
Having ADHD may result in challenges in several key areas including: inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. In your life, this might look like being unable to complete tasks, difficulty sitting still during meetings, or unintentionally intterupting others in conversations.
Despite this, individuals with ADHD do not need to just suffer. Many effective strategies can lessen the negative impacts: including ADHD coaching, medication, and more. Furthermore, some characteristics associated with ADHD can become strengths when the conditions are right - such as heightened creativity or the ability to focus on tasks that are meaningful or engaging.
What is ADHD Coaching Like at Daniel Huang CTS?
ADHD coaching is a structured, skills-based approach to help adults better manage focus, organisation, and follow-through. Our ADHD coaching program draws upon a cognitive-behavourial therapy program developed at Harvard Medical School which has been shown to offer significant benefit to many individuals with ADHD.
Key themes of our ADHD coaching include:
Understanding your ADHD
Organising & planning
Task initiation and follow-through
Reducing distractibility
Modifying negative thought patterns
Dealing with procrastination
Practising skills and developing sustainable systems
Our sessions emphasise two important aspects. Aside from teaching clients about ADHD and various skills that may help, we work closely with clients to understand their unique challenges. Only by understanding clients’ lives as they are today can we develop systems help manage their unique circumstances moving forward. We also place a priority on practising any skills and systems, which is crucial if they are to be useful to the client outside of sessions.

Are There Other Ways to Manage ADHD?
Although ADHD coaching is one helpful avenue to manage ADHD, there are a number of other important approaches. These include:
Diagnosis may give you further certainty and clarity as to whether you have ADHD & information about the condition
Medication is an important tool for many clients to manage ADHD symptoms, although some patients may experience side effects or not repsond to certain medications
Lifestyle factors including adequate sleep, regular exercise, and a healthy diet all have an enormous impact on ADHD
Supportive relationships are an often overlooked factor that particularly help with motivation or emotional challenges that are influenced by ADHD
Everyday structure and skills, a focus of ADHD coaching, can help clients thrive and make the most of their circumstances
Individuals with ADHD may find that having multiple tools to manage ADHD yields the best results. For example, medication can provide clients with a healthy baseline from which to engage in ADHD coaching.
